Written for the powerhouse duo of Claire Edwardes (percussion) and Julian Smiles (cello), Re-Echo is a 6-minute exploration of space, silence, and resonance.
The work is a re-imagining of Abbott's earlier percussion duo, The Empty Quarter. Inspired by the vast, silent desert region of the same name in Saudi Arabia, Re-Echo captures the feeling of isolation—separation from country, family, and friends.
Musically, it leverages the unique acoustic properties of the vibraphone and cello. The metallic shimmer of the vibes blends with the warmth of the cello to create a 'lush and evocative' soundworld that is both desolate and deeply emotional.
For Professional Recitals: A stunning contrast piece that allows both players to demonstrate sensitivity and timbral control.
For University Exams: A "Grade A" choice for advanced students looking for contemporary Australian repertoire that is accessible to the audience but technically rewarding.
For Recording: As featured on the ABC Classics album Kammerbox, this work records beautifully due to its clear textures and resonant harmonies.
