Commissioned by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, this 18-minute work is a sonic exploration of the unintended consequences of human action. Inspired by Matthew Quick's painting and the 1992 "Friendly Floatees" spill—where 29,000 bath toys were lost at sea—the piece traces the journey of plastic into the North Pacific Garbage Patch.
While the narrative is playful on the surface, the subtext is profound. The music depicts the disintegration of these "innocent" objects into the ecosystem, marrying evocative orchestral textures with an insidious environmental message.
