Commissioned for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra's 50 Fanfares Project (2021), this work offers a compelling inversion of the traditional fanfare. Rather than a mere herald of external triumph, Fanfare for the Melancholy holds space for the internal landscape.

It explores the paradox of celebration and reflection. As noted in the score, it is an acknowledgment of "melancholy"—not as a negative feeling, but as a recognition of "yearning and bitter-sweet". The texture is resonant and lyrical, allowing the ensemble to showcase sustain, blend, and phrasing over rhythmic aggression.

Usage Case: At 4 minutes and 30 seconds, it serves as an excellent contrast piece or a sophisticated opener that defies audience expectations. Since it requires Brass Ensemble without Timpani, it offers logistical flexibility for programs where percussion is limited.
