This is the work that launched the series. Winner of the 2019 Paul Lowin Prize for Composition, Do I Matter? gives voice to the private thoughts we rarely speak aloud.
The text is curated from an anonymous survey where women were asked to share their 'hidden thoughts' on bravery, fear, and desire. The result is a libretto that oscillates between the mundane ("I have a huge hair on my chin") and the profound ("Am I loved?"), elevating the private internal monologue into a public, shared experience.
Uniquely, the work invites audience participation. In live performance, the audience is often invited to submit their own hidden thoughts in the foyer, which can be incorporated into the performance, creating an immediate bridge between the listener and the ensemble.
The Usage Case:
For Programmers: A proven 'event' piece that engages audiences before they even enter the hall. It works exceptionally well for International Women’s Day or festivals focusing on community connection.
For Universities: The sextet + vocal ensemble instrumentation makes it an ideal collaboration project between a Conservatorium's vocal department and its New Music ensemble.
